YKK AP Technology Museum

Thinking Architecture
— Combining Old and New —

YKK AP Technology Museum

Concept

Realized by renovating a factory originally completed in 1959, the YKK AP Technology Museum is a facility that vividly embodies the fusion of old and new in architecture.

The steel truss roof and steel sashes, preserved as they were at the time of construction, embed YKK AP’s history and founding monozukuri philosophy into the space. In contrast, the exterior features a full-height curtain wall constructed entirely from recycled aluminum. In addition, the existing building envelope (roof, walls, and floors) underwent comprehensive thermal insultation retrofitting, transforming the formerly uninsulated structure into a high-performance, energy-conserving building.

This dynamic space, where the strength of the old structure merges with modern environmental technology that captures natural light, symbolizes YKK AP’s commitment to connecting the legacy of past technology with the creation of future value.
