Capital Increase for Brazil Aluminum Smelter, Nippon Amazon Aluminum

Enhancing the Stable Supply of 'Green Aluminum' to Achieve a Decarbonized, Circular Society

Corporate Information

YKK AP Inc. (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President: Akira Uozu) announced on December 19 that it has acquired all shares in Nippon Amazon Aluminum Co., Ltd. (NAAC; Headquarters: Chuo-ku,Tokyo; President: Toshiro Okada), previously owned by Sumitomo Chemical Co., Ltd. (Headquarters:Chuo-ku, Tokyo; President: Keiichi Iwata). NAAC holds a 49% stake in the Brazilian aluminum smelting company, Albras. Additionally, YKK AP has subscribed to a third-party allotment of shares by NAAC. As a result, YKK AP's equity stake in NAAC has increased from 2.02% to 6.31%. This change is expected to nearly double the volume of aluminum ingots procured from Albras.

NAAC was established in 1977 as the Japanese investment company for the Amazon Aluminum Project (*1). Its investee company, Albras, conducts aluminum smelting using renewable energy from the Amazon region, producing "green aluminum" materials with reduced CO2 emissions during the manufacturing process.

In recent years, the need to reduce CO2 emissions and achieve a decarbonized society has driven a global surge in demand for green aluminum materials. However, securing a stable supply remains a critical challenge for businesses. YKK AP uses approximately 140,000 tons of aluminum annually in Japan for architectural sashes, curtain walls, exteriors, and industrial products.

Through this capital increase, YKK AP will expand the volume of green aluminum materials procured from Albras, strengthening the stable supply system. This effort will increase the proportion of green aluminum within its supply chain, contributing to a significant reduction in environmental impact.

As part of its "Evolution 2030" vision established in 2023, YKK AP has prioritized contributing to the global environment. Moving forward, the company will continue to enhance its initiatives toward decarbonization and a circular society, actively working to achieve a sustainable future.e supply
