Obtains Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) Certification

Corporate Information

YKK AP Inc. (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President:Hidemitsu Hori) revised its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction target for FY2030 from the original target of 30% to 50% (both as compared to FY2013 levels) and obtained a Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)*1 certification for a target that was “well below 2 degrees Celsius.”

YKK AP outlined as its Environmental Vision for 2050: To achieve zero environmental burdens throughout the entire lifecycles of our business activities.” As such, the company is engaged in the development and sales of products, including windows and doors with high thermal insulation performance, which contribute to the reduction of GHG emissions, and in the reduction of environmental impacts at the procurement, manufacturing, and distribution stages.

In January 2019, YKK AP obtained certification from the SBTi for a GHG emissions reduction target that was in line with Paris Agreement goal of limiting global warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius. While the GHG emissions reduction target established by YKK AP in FY2017 was to reduce by 2030, in-house emissions by 30% (as compared to FY2013), the company is expected to achieve this target ahead of plan in FY2020. The recent revision, which was implemented in response, ambitiously further increases the target amount.

Toward achievement of the newly established environmental target, YKK AP will triple its investments in renewable energy sources from the past. Additionally, the company will continue its thoroughgoing energy-saving activities through periodic sharing of information between manufacturing sites, information on energy-saving good practice examples, and their horizontal deployment. Continuous reduction of GHG gas emissions will be made through the proactive introduction of high efficiency facilities, such as manufacturing equipment, lighting, and air conditioning.

To create a better society and environment for the next generation, YKK AP will take on, toward the realization of a carbon-free society, the challenge of creating new value through technological innovation and achieving zero environmental impact.
